This year, my dad decided to come out for Thanksgiving weekend to surprise Evie! He hadn't been here since Christmas back in 2014, plus it's a ND year for the holidays this year, so it worked out well. We planned it for a few weeks leading up to Thanksgiving, and though Todd and I totally slipped a few times, Evie was none the wiser when the three of us went to pick her up at school last Tuesday. Her reaction was priceless when she came running up to us! She looked at him and asked me, "Mommy, who's that?" And I asked her, "Who do you think it is?" And she asked me, "Jiji??" and ran up to hug my dad. Later, when we asked her who she thought it was, she said she thought it was a man dressed up in his clothes. =)

This past weekend, I participated in two 5Ks, and both were great! We had beautiful weather (though a little warm for this late in the year) and races are always such great events that give me a close sense of community and support, which are things I really needed this weekend in particular.

This year, Evie wanted to be "a mermaid with a purple tail and teal hair." She also wanted "shell boobs" but I put my foot down on that one, haha. When Todd asked what she wanted him to be, she said a squid, so he put together a quick-and-dirty costume the weekend before, and I found an octopus hat that is apparently meant for a dog. I bought it anyway.

Right before I left for the conference in Detroit, we took an afternoon off to meet with our photographer Chris Richards for our annual fall photo shoot! This year, we met at Sabino Canyon, a beautiful park right in the Catalina Foothills area of Tucson. We go there quite often, mostly for group runs, but have also visited to hike and show off the pretty area to out-of-town guests. There are various levels of difficulty, starting with a tram that will take you up (and back, if you choose) into the canyon on the tram road and escalating up to fairly technical trails with steep elevation changes.

It's been a busy October, and a particularly busy past week or so in our household! We had our annual photo session back on the 11th, and then I headed to Detroit for the Women of Color STEM Conference! I got to attend on IBM's dollar to receive one of Career Communications Group's Technology Rising Star awards.
